Workshops

The Hardware Platform is currently managing two workshops; the Electronic Workshop and the Mechanical Workshop.

On these facilities, the Champalimaud Research (CR) peers can access to an extensive list of equipment and consumables.

The majority of the consumables are free and can be used outside the workshops without the need to be returned. This has an huge impact in the daily activities because CR peers can find and use the items right away, without going through the slow process of find and order the items.

A very small part of the consumables are ready to pick and use but they will be charged to the group/laboratory since these are very expensive items. Equipment for loan is also available.

The main purpose of the workshops is to remove bureaucracy and time between need a consumable or equipment and using it.

For additional information, pending questions or suggestions, please send an e-mail to workshops@neuro.fchampalimaud.org.

Electronic workshop

This workshop is dedicated to electronics, printed circuit boards assembling and wiring.

Weekly:

  • The stock of more than 300 consumables items ready to use is updated, and
  • 19 instruments and devices (equipment) are maintained.

From all the services, consumables and equipment inside this workshop, here, we highlight 4 topics:

  • Electronics items ready to used
  • Wires and Heat Shrinks
  • The rules
  • Available equipment

Electronics items ready to use

The picture bellow illustrates several electronic components that are at the CR peer disposal.

Easily, trough the icon of each item on the correspondent drawer, the user can find what he is looking and can compare different sizes and types of the the same consumables.

The inventory is weekly updated and the lacking items are ordered.

Wires and heat shrinks

For wiring producing, the CR peer can access to several different sizes, types and colors of wires and heat shrinks.

Wire types:

  • Single conductor
  • Multiple conductor
  • Coaxial
  • Ribbon

Wire sizes:

  • Minimum: 30 AWG (0.05 mm2)
  • Maximum: 14 AWG (2.08 mm2).

Heat shrink diameters:

  • Minimum: 1.6 mm
  • Maximum: 18.0 mm

The rules

Like any space that is shared by several persons, the workshop have rules that must be follow by everyone that uses the facility.

They are only 2 main rules and 4 simple sub-rules. These are coded into two different stickers and 4 colors.

The main rules - 2 different stickers:

  • Electronic Workshop - Can be used by any workshop user
  • Hardware Platform - Exclusively for the use of the Hardware Platform personnel

The sub-rules - 4 different colors:

  • green - Can be taken or used and don't need to be returned
  • orange - Can leave the workshop (be loan) but need to be delivered within 3 days
  • red - Can't leave the workshop for any reason
  • blue - Can take it permanently but need to inform an Hardware Platform person before or send an e-mail to workshops@neuro.fchampalimaud.org
    • These items will later be charged to your laboratory/group
